It is argued that sexism prevented generative action to grow the faith in the 1920s. The fellowship movement in the 1950s provided a paradigm shift for how to do church. This case study examines the importance of the fellowship strategy in supporting growth and strengthening women’s leadership to the point that a congregation could be sustained. This thesis makes the claim that the fellowship movement played a significant role in flattening the gender hierarchy, allowing for Unitarian Universalism to flourish in Lakeland. The fellowship movement was a successful growth strategy because of the presence of women. This study of women’s history in one congregation hopes to contribute to our understanding of our Unitarian Universalist religious groups who engage in behavior that is often destructive to society; (b) How mass communication aids and ebets like-minded groups, causing increased polarization and diviseness; (c) Insights into the nature and form of the human argumentative proccess; and (d) The innate epistemic vigilance humans possess to evaluate arguments and how this unique human characteristic can be employed to produce opportunities for both individual and societal change and transformation through dialogue. The commonly held belief that people can't change which condemns us all to accepting the miseries and dysfunction so apparent in the world. This study will re-phrase this misbelief to say that people can't change unless (a) they are open to change and (b) they are provided with the tools to change. Current literature in both psychology and neuroscience rebuts the idea that humans are fixed and inadaptable. Research in both medical and nonmedical therapies show not only that people can change but also that humans are biologically built to change. This occurs both as a result of the brain's ability to re-assign physical tasks from a nonfunctioning area of the brain to another functioning area, and also the capacity to change a brain function from what was previously thought to be useful in a singular way, such as a visual function to a sensory function. But o f equal importance is research that shows that the mind's simple thought processes can change the brain, resulting in behavioral changes. As a platform for further discussion and experimentation in the field of civil discourse, this author suggests the development of dialogical methodologies without which the dysfunctional nature of our current conversational model will continue to divide us into groups of like-minded people competing against other groups of like-minded people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/82988b2e-0111-4bea-9d46-bef6a224c179?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["82988b2e-0111-4bea-9d46-bef6a224c179"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master of Arts Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["21727450-b09e-49df-a1b3-3fc1ae01cce1"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["82988b2e-0111-4bea-9d46-bef6a224c179"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["meadville.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["jdechant@meadville.edu"],"_version_":1787554395274084352,"timestamp":"2024-01-08T20:11:55.952Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-09-22T18:06:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-01-04T17:18:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"03f10e57-e947-4a42-af5c-fac8ca9cba3a","accessControl_ssim":["3bcd443c-8fdb-48f6-a34e-16e6d08e063f"],"depositor_ssim":["jdechant@meadville.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["jdechant@meadville.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Holy Nerd—A Look at the Spirituality of Tabletop Gamers by a Unitarian Universalist"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-09-22T18:06:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2023-09-26T21:29:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["48f3c21b-491b-412c-822e-3134d72d1a5d"],"hasLease_ssim":["773c8bdb-1b03-43db-94be-0bf236f541a4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Meadville Lombard Theological School"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts in Religious Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Meadville Lombard Theological School"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carmichael, Jeffrey, II"],"keyword_tesim":["Tabletop role-playing"],"subject_tesim":["Dungeons and Dragons (Game)","Multiculturalism","Games","Fantasy gamer","Unitarian Universalism","Gamer","Role-playing games","Ritual"],"abstract_tesim":["My thesis argues that there is a spiritual need by the members of the tabletop role-playing and miniature gaming community that is going unfulfilled and that Unitarian Universalism as theology can hellp fulfill that need and create a conversation among gamers about the spirituality of their games. That need is the recognition of gaming as a spiritual practice. This need is currently going unfulfilled because of the rising numbers of non-religious members of the population, a rift between religion and gaming caused by the persecuation of the gaming community by conservative faith leaders, and the difficulties of theology to deal with play and fictional worlds. Unitarian Universalism, being a liberal faith tradition and open to exploring a more comprehensive range of expressions of spirituality and theology, allows for a broader and more open view of spirituality to examine gaming and the theology of gamers. Additionally, this thesis will support Unitarian Universalism's significant commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and multiculturalism in calling for social action and justice by its members to aid others struggling in a divided and conflicted world. While the population of adult gamers typically represents a lower socioeconomic population, it also points out how gaming has grown across all demographics. With the growth of digital publishing, cost reduction of 3D printing, and the growth in the use of online virtual gaming tables since COVID-19, the cost of miniature war games and role-playing games has opened these games up to more players with less money to invest in the hobby beyond past levels. Allowing players to be able to pick up multiple games, books, and miniatures, when before players would be limited in one or two games at most.
