The commonly held belief that people can't change which condemns us all to accepting the miseries and dysfunction so apparent in the world.  This study will re-phrase this misbelief to say that people can't change unless (a) they are open to change and (b) they are provided with the tools to change.  Current literature in both psychology and neuroscience rebuts the idea that humans are fixed and inadaptable.  Research in both medical and nonmedical therapies show not only that people can change but also that humans are biologically built to change.  This occurs both as a result of the brain's ability to re-assign physical tasks from a nonfunctioning area of the brain to another functioning area, and also the capacity to change a brain function from what was previously thought to be useful in a singular way, such as a visual function to a sensory function.  But o f equal importance is research that shows that the mind's simple thought processes can change the brain, resulting in behavioral changes.  As a platform for further discussion and experimentation in the field of civil discourse, this author suggests the development of dialogical methodologies without which the dysfunctional nature of our current conversational model will continue to divide us into groups of like-minded people competing against other groups of like-minded people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/82988b2e-0111-4bea-9d46-bef6a224c179?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["82988b2e-0111-4bea-9d46-bef6a224c179"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master of Arts Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["21727450-b09e-49df-a1b3-3fc1ae01cce1"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["82988b2e-0111-4bea-9d46-bef6a224c179"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["meadville.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["jdechant@meadville.edu"],"_version_":1787554395274084352,"timestamp":"2024-01-08T20:11:55.952Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Thesis","hits":2,"label":"Thesis"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":1,"label":"Dissertation"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Doebke, Roger","hits":1,"label":"Doebke, Roger"},{"value":"Evison, Ian Stroud","hits":1,"label":"Evison, Ian Stroud"},{"value":"Garrison, Joseph Gail","hits":1,"label":"Garrison, Joseph Gail"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Psychology","hits":3,"label":"Psychology"},{"value":"Pastoral theology","hits":2,"label":"Pastoral theology"},{"value":"Culture conflict","hits":1,"label":"Culture conflict"},{"value":"Dialogue","hits":1,"label":"Dialogue"},{"value":"Polarization (Social sciences)","hits":1,"label":"Polarization (Social sciences)"},{"value":"Preaching","hits":1,"label":"Preaching"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":3,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1914","hits":1,"label":"1914"},{"value":"1980","hits":1,"label":"1980"},{"value":"2014","hits":1,"label":"2014"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Bachelor of Divinity Dissertations and Theses, 1916-1959","hits":1,"label":"Bachelor of Divinity Dissertations and Theses, 1916-1959"},{"value":"Doctor of Ministry Dissertations and Projects","hits":1,"label":"Doctor of Ministry Dissertations and Projects"},{"value":"Master of Arts Theses","hits":1,"label":"Master of Arts Theses"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Doctor of Ministry","hits":1,"label":"Doctor of Ministry"},{"value":"Master of Arts in Religion","hits":1,"label":"Master of Arts in Religion"},{"value":"Master of Theological Science","hits":1,"label":"Master of Theological Science"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Meadville Lombard Theological School","hits":2,"label":"Meadville Lombard Theological School"},{"value":"Meadville Theological School","hits":1,"label":"Meadville Theological School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Meadville Lombard Theological School","hits":3,"label":"Meadville Lombard Theological School"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":3,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
