Between 1845-1909, Meadville Theological students read essays—largely on theology, ministry, and issues in Christianity—aloud at the Anniversary Exercises, the annual commemoration of the founding of Meadville Theological School, held almost every June or July. In the first years, students of all levels read essays, but later, as the Anniversary Exercises became the de facto commencement ceremony, the readers were mostly graduates. Later Anniversary Exercise Essays were therefore capstone essays; some students referred to their works as graduating essays or even "theses" or "dissertations."
